BRISTOL, Tenn. — Alexis DeJoria’s Funny Car sat on the starting line at Bristol Dragway on Friday evening emitting a low growl.

When the light on the Christmas tree turned green, DeJoria’s Toyota tore down the drag strip, hitting speeds in excess of 300 mph on the top end of the track before the parachutes unfurled out of the back of the car to slow the vehicle.

DeJoria’s elapsed time of 4.121 put her fourth in the first qualifying session of the weekend, in excellent position to continue her hot start to the 2014 campaign.

“For the first run out here at the track, we’re feeling really good about that run,” DeJoria said moments after climbing out of her car. “It was a great starting point. We’ll try to start it up and maybe run a 4.0.” DeJoria is aiming high these days. It may only be her third full-time season on the NHRA Mello Yello Series, but the 36-year-old from Venice, Calif., has placed herself in title contention in the highly competitive Funny Car division eight races into the season.
