Alexis and father John Paul DeJoriaPOMONA, Calif. (February 9, 2014)— After making history on Saturday afternoon for becoming the first woman ever to cross the ‘under four seconds’ threshold in Funny Car, one of NHRA’s four elite classes, driver Alexis DeJoria went into round one of eliminations of the 54th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals on Sunday morning armed with an extra boost of confidence.

With her record breaking 3.997-second run from Q3, the No. three qualified Kalitta Motorsports Patrón XO Cafe Toyota Camry Funny Car team had lance choice over No. 14 qualifier Gary Densham in round one. As the fifth pair up to run, the black, purple, and gold team chose the left lane. Both cars had trouble almost immediately off the line, and both drivers quickly reacted by pedaling the car down the 1,000-foot stretch. Unfortunately, Densham edged past DeJoria and was able to set off the win lights first, ending DeJoria’s day and banner weekend.

History Making Run“Despite going out in the first round today, I’m happy with the progress our team has made,” said DeJoria, a third year Funny Car driver who calls Austin, Texas her home. “We qualified third, which is our highest qualifying position yet, so I’m really happy about that. We made our first three second run, I get to forever claim the title of ‘first woman to make a three-second pass in Funny Car,’ and we finally got to race our brand new Patrón XO Cafe Toyota Camry for the very first time. Unfortunately, things didn’t play out the way we had hoped this morning. We felt confident we were going to win that first round, but you just never know. Drag racing is a very humbling sport. Anything can happen. I tried to pedal it, but my car just wouldn’t hook up right and I saw Densham go past me. That was it for us today.  On to the next, we’ll get ‘em in Phoenix.”

POMONA, Calif. (February 8, 2014)— History was made at the 54th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals as Alexis DeJoria became the first woman ever to run in the three second zone in her 10,000 horsepower Kalitta Motorsports Patrón XO Cafe Toyota Camry Funny Car on Saturday at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Now officially the quickest female ever to compete in the Funny Car category, DeJoria became the 9th Funny Car driver to join the coveted ‘three second club’ as she powered her XO Cafe hot rod down the 1,000-foot stretch in 3.997-seconds at 318.32-mph during the third qualifying session.

“It feels absolutely amazing to come out to the first race of the season in Pomona, California and make a three second run, and be a part of that exclusive ‘three second club.’ I always knew we had it in us; it was just a matter of time,” said DeJoria. “We’ve learned so much. We’ve got an awesome car, and everything has really come together.  I’m so proud of my guys, and so excited we were able to make history in front of all of our family and friends, in our new car with our new colors. This definitely sets the tone for what is sure to be an awesome season.”

Out of 21 cars on the property, the 3.997-sec ET held up to be the low of the session, allowing DeJoria the advantage of three bonus points. DeJoria goes into Sunday’s eliminations qualified in the No.3 spot on the 16-car ladder, and will face Gary Densham in Round One of Eliminations.

Eliminations begin at 11AM PST on Sunday, February 9. For more information, please visit www.alexisdejoria.com, Follow Us on Twitter @ADR_Nitro771, or Like Us on Facebook Alexis DeJoria.

Austin Fit Mag Feb 2014 Cover-1You’re beautiful, young, fit, and have a dad who’s one of America’s wealthiest businessmen. You could easily follow in his footsteps, continuing in the family business that has brought fame and some four billion in fortune. Or you could absorb the lessons learned at his knee about living life to its fullest, recognize your passions, and branch off from the family tree to write your own success story. The latter is the course of Austin-area resident Alexis DeJoria. She’s a nationally ranked Nitro Funny Car racer and the daughter of John Paul DeJoria—the co-founder of Paul Mitchell Systems and Patrón Spirits.

DeJoria grew up in California and, at one time, thought she might earn her living working for Paul Mitchell Systems, but when she was 16 years old, she attended her first race in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series and was immediately hooked on Nitro Funny Cars. What are Nitro Funny Cars? In a nutshell, they’re drag racing vehicles with a forward-mounted engine (dragsters have the engine in the back) and a fiberglass or carbon fiber body that tilts up in the back. Using a high-performance fuel mix of 85–90 percent nitromethane (CH3N02, once used for rocket fuel) and 10–15 percent methanol, these cars represent readily available models (currently, the Ford Mustang, Fiat S.p.A.’s Dodge Charger, and the Toyota Camry).  Read More
